: CHIMNEY SWEEPS

Some stove manufacturers recommend cleaning the chimney every two years. This, of course, in most cases depends upon usage. Many of our clients have an annual clean to be on the safe side.
The mechanics are; the hot smoke from the fire rises and as it does it cools downs, condensates and this is the cause of tar building up which could eventually stop the air/smoke flow or in extreme cases, catch fire.
The build up of soot and tar depends largely on the type of wood you are using and type of flue installation. Another hazard is nesting birds, which adore a "resting" chimney. In Quinta do Lago we took out of a seldom used chimney a bees nest, my brothers dormant chimney had the biggest collection of twigs and nesting material ever seen.
So there are no hard and fast rules, but many clients have a yearly sweep and inspection for peace of mind.

When to consider sweeping:

      If the fire doesn't pull and is sluggish
      Smoke coming back down the chimney
      After a hard winter's work
      After long rest

(NB very high winds can be cause of the first two points)
